I currently knit and spin and have become more active in the SCA so more sewing! I also do quilt and bead-work and have learned how to Norse wire weave. I do have past experience with crochet and ceramics, but don't do a lot of it now. I may also be lured into weaving in the near future, so life is fun and interesting! Come share my adventures!PNWBookGirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05599445541260252801noreply@blogger.comBlogger633125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1682286666187388195.post-81400211379134091922018-03-03T00:14:00.001-08:002018-03-03T01:25:12.122-08:00Rose City Yarn Crawl 2018

I have been busy knitting my fingers to nubs in the last few weeks. I've been test knitting some patterns for another designer. I got some Knit Picks Preciosa and did a larger version of the Number Play shawl.

Then I did a second version called Number Play 2 Shawl. A fingering weight with more added to the design as well as a picot bind off. I have a samples in Fierce Fibers Renai and one in Knit Picks Stroll Gradient. I posted it to the Facebook Free Ravelry Patterns group and someone started it and had a question. To double check, I cast on a third one using up leftover sock yarns. Okay, some of them are also leftover shawl yarns, lol!

I had done a sample knit mitt for Stacey along with the idea of using the stitch pattern as a cowl for her to take to Stitches West and Rose City Yarn Crawl. A communication mix-up and they didn't get debuted as I had hoped. The pattern reminded me of Willamette Falls so with the Waterway theme of the Crawl, I went with that.
I think that I can get a beanie hat with a 50 gram ball of yarn. That's coming up next. So look for a Willamette Falls Hat. ;-)

I'm offering the patterns for free through March 7th. Then I'll change them to a low fee.

I have the Number Play shawls made up in Knit Picks yarns. I need to do that with the Willamette Falls items. I have some lovely cashmere blend yarn coming to me soon. So more samples to be knit up! They seem to be receiving lovely attention.

Tamra and I for the third year went out and got our passports stamped all in one day. We added in a Bob's Red Mill store stop, as well as Penzey's and Trader Joe's... There was also a coffee and churros at 180 Xurros and a bagel sandwich from Spielman Bagels and Coffee Roasters. It was yummy, but oh my! It took 20 minutes to get it! We're still in search of a good lunch point. We'll have to see what the crawl looks like next year. Tam picked up some Luna yarns she's wanted. I got a pretty blue MadelineTosh Sport to make some mitts and a hat with. We started with Wool n' Wares and ended at Northwest Wools. I think next year we might come up with a fun matched shirt or buttons to wear.

I got a message from Jessica asking about my Chicken Curry recipe, so figured it would be easier to put it up here for her to get.

This is a family recipe that I grew up with that has morphed into my own version. Old version was all chicken bone-in pieces and I think you cooked it with the rice so it was done when the chicken was cooked.

Tami's Chicken Curry

1 chicken breast per person - I use boneless, skinless, use what your family prefers, my husband doesn't like thigh meat, so I don't use that

1/4 cup brown sugar

1 or 2 teaspoons Yellow Curry Powder

1 teaspoon Turmeric (optional)

1 can Cream of Chicken Soup, you can also use Cream of Mushroom (family recipe uses this) or Cream of Potato

1 potato per person

1 regular sized carrot peeled and chopped, or a handful of baby carrots either left whole or chopped

1 yellow onion (chop and saute and add to mixture - also optional if you don't like onions)

1 can of coconut milk (found in the Asian food aisle, don't skimp and you want the whole coconut milk!)

Garlic can also be added if you like garlic

This can be put into an Instant Pot with frozen chicken pieces, do the Stew or Soup setting. It can also be put into a slow cooker and cooked during the day. I used to put the chicken breasts into a pan of water and defrost/cook them with dried Walla Walla onions I had on hand. Then once breasts are cooked, shred the chicken and add to liquid mixture. You can also microwave the potatoes and carrots and add in with the cooked chicken. Then its just a matter of heating up all the other ingredients and heating until hot.

This can either have a gravy like consistency or a soup like one. If you want it more soup like, add half to a full can of milk when adding in your Cream of Whatever soup.

Cook Jasmine rice and serve over, or in, if you're going with the soup consistency.

If you want it the "old" way, Spray a 9x11 pan to prevent sticking. Put in rice, place chicken pieces on top, make mixture and pour on top. Bake in 350 oven for 30-45 minutes. This assumes defrosted chicken! You'll need to add the milk with this soup for this option. Oh and it didn't use the coconut milk, potatoes or carrots or onions. (See much better now!)

Last week I had a container of cranberries leftover from the holidays as well as three pears from my Imperfect Produce box. So I pulled out Michele's Cranberry - Pear- Bourbon-Ginger Jam recipe.

My changes:
I didn't have 4 cups of cranberries, I had 3. I also didn't have Bourbon or the Whiskey ( I used it on the Irish Cream also on the link), but I did have some Spiced Brandy! I also only had half of a small jar of Penzye's Candied Ginger Bits.

I ended up with a pint jar, two jelly jars and two tiny Pot de Creme jars I was reusing. One of the jelly jars refuses to stay sealed, so its in the frig. I think the other jars will go in the pantry until Thanksgiving when they'll be gifted.

I'm busy making a Bigger on the Inside shawl for our friend Jenna (my project link over on the sidebar). She's a Dr Who fan. Of course, I can't do it as the pattern is written! I'm using three skeins of yarn in different colors. Only the middle in Tardis blue as it should be. I've added in a couple extra Tardis motifs in that section, so that means I widened out the top. I used Abstract Fiber's Mighty Sock in the Constellation colorway. the middle is Spud & Chloe's Fine in the Snorkel colorway. The bottom I'm planning to use a different edging and using Alexandra's Crafts Silver Falls Blue Pacific colorway. I want to do a swirl knit on edging to simulate a vortex.

Sorry, no pics, but a couple of links to check out. ;-)

I decided that while I haven't been terrible about my personal care, I could certainly do better! I used to be really good about walking the dogs. I got better in December and I'd like to carry that forward. Liz had shared this in December - http://wantforwellness.com/30-day-self-care-challenge/ I looked at it and thought that it was something I could do and asked to be buddies with her in the process. Accountability really helps!

So last night before bed I got a couple of TED talks in. Did not intend them to work this way, but since they were both in Spanish, I had to watch and read. They were these - https://www.ted.com/talks/martina_flor_the_secret_language_of_letter_design#t-723300 and https://www.ted.com/talks/karina_galperin_why_don_t_we_write_words_the_way_pronounce_them#t-657640

Today, I need to drink a lot of water. I have some elderflower syrup that will help with that. Though with how cold things are, might make that some of my elderberry syrup to help boost the immune system!

How is your self-care? What do you do regularly for yourself?

My dear husband was the one that encouraged me to learn how to knit. I resisted for a couple years, happy with my crochet. Then took the plunge and haven't looked back. I use crochet skills still, but knitting it my love.

Along the way, I was changing things that didn't work for me in a pattern. Then he started saying that I should be writing my own patterns.

2016 and 2017 I actually did create some patterns, but nothing officially written down and published on Ravelry, except for one - Number Play (Using link will open a new window). To date I have 710 unique downloads of the pattern! I need to knit up the Knit Picks version so that I can submit it there. I've written the Number Play Two shawl, a fingering weight version knit with Fierce Fibers yarn and Knit Picks Stroll Gradient. The first one I was inspired by the Equinox colorway of Stacey's Buxom yarn and told her it needed to be knit up as a sample for Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival. I had a little over a week to write and knit the pattern up! Then go back and test knit it to fix errors, and there were a few. ;-) With Number Play Two, I've figured out a better format so when I release it, I'll also do one more update for Number Play.
I have been feeling the lack, so going to try to improve my posting. From my SCA Facebook account I found out that LiveJournal is getting weird, so spent the afternoon and part of the evening sucking up my posts from there. July 2004 to March 2007. Dropped it all into a Word doc.

Many thoughts, but going to install Final Fantasy something or other and play a bit with my husband, because he really wants me to try it out.

I have been knitting a block a day almost from my recovered hexi-puffs. (I had frogged all my hexi-puffs as part of the 2016 Ravellenics Games. Why? Because it was taking way too long to get them done. Three years and only fifty puffs? I could knit them faster, but the amount needed to make a decent sized quilt, wasn't going to happen anytime soon. So they were frogged.)

So I'm now up to 27 completed blocks. The original pattern called for only 24 blocks, but seemed more shawl like. I'm going for decent blanket size here. So at least 50?

I'm continuing to put inches on my Scrappy Ten Stitch blanket. I think its about 56 inches square. I put out a call on Ravelry around my birthday and received some nice donations of yarn to continue on with the project. I did have to decide that some Lopi yarn was just a bit too scratchy for this project. Yes, its going to be on top of other blankets while camping, but still near face and maybe bare arms, so needs to be softer. I'll have to come up with another project to use those leftovers with.

Since I had frogged or completed projects with the Ravellenics game, I thought I would start the Clapotis with some of my handspun that has been sitting in stash forever. Some pretty merino-tencel dyed by Stitchjones in a pale pink called Quince Blossom. It's a delicate lace weight yarn in the neighborhood over a 1000 yards. Yeah, I got uber fine and got a two ply out of it.

The Quince Blossom is so very soft. So very fine. I'm thinking that I may need to ply this with another yarn or on itself. I'll have to think on that.

Trying to get the Clapotis started, after sitting down and whipping out 18 stitchmarkers just for the project, I kept struggling. I wasn't using my highlighter tape to keep me on the correct row, so kept bouncing around. Started on a US 6 based on other lace knitters, decided that was too big and so dropped down to a US 4. That would have worked, it was making a nice fabric out of the stitches.

What was wrong then? It was going to be a slog of having to pay too close attention for all the setup, then some pretty straight boring knitting for a long while. Then I'd have a pretty scarf that I'd worry about snagging on something. I think something like this needs to be out of a slightly sturdier yarn so that it can wear well. Right now its out of my queue, AGAIN.

I have two skeins of kind of a dark colorway of Noro Silk Garden Sock that was given to me for my birthday two years ago. I tried knitting them into knee high stockings, but the pattern was so boring that even though it was fitted to my calf and I took good notes...only one got done. It sat for eighteen months, alone. I tried several times to start the second one, but it wasn't working.

I want a pair of knee highs! Just not from this yarn. So still trying to find the right project for this yarn. I think I stuck it on a project today, but probably not enough of it for the project in reality.

Trying to find a project that isn't garter stitch to get going on. I want to knit something for me (yes, these two blankets are still for me, but blankets dude) and I want to be excited about knitting them that they want all my time. Not something I can easily put down for a few days, or a week, or never pick up again.

Going to try a pair of two at a time toe up socks in a semi-colorwork pattern using a leftover sock yarn and some sport weight yarn.

Norbert is back home with us again. He was gone a week. Came back in a nice box and with a paw print. Leeloo and Kieran seem to be sleeping a little more and a little quieter still. I'm starting to get back to a normal sleeping pattern. Though I can tell the depression is making me want to sleep more, maybe to catch up with not sleeping? There have been noises at night or during the day when there shouldn't have been, from where Norbert used to hang out. Still looking for him during the day.

In the last few months I've finally found my reading mojo again. Granted some of the books have been slightly disappointing. Or maybe my reading tastes are changing? Authors of series that have been going on for several years seem to have books that are not keeping my attention. Or seem to have drifted towards a style I don't enjoy.

Most disappointing is when they start a new series and you want to jump in and enjoy it, but its not the same as the other world. But you continue on trying to find something that calls to you in the new world, and you're just not finding that thing that will hold you. Not even through the whole first book, much less a new series.

So you're left trying to find a new series/author to fall in love with. I met Anne Bishop at a Patricia Briggs book signing and tried out her series "The Others." That I have been enjoying. To the point that I requested an omnibus book of another one of her previous series. See above. I have hopes that I'll enjoy it. I know others who have.

I have books coming in from the library, but not as often as in the past because of this struggle.

Here's some authors:

Faith Hunter - Jane Yellowrock and previous her Rogue Mage series
Seanan MacGuire - her Tobie Daye series, I've read the first in the Indexing and have been hit or miss on the InCryptid series (1st & 4th, but not the ones with her brother.)
Eileen Wilks
Kim Harrison - The Hollows, but not her latest
Kelley Armstrong - Otherworld Series, but not others
Iris Johansen - I've been reading her since the early 80s (Oh how that dates me!)
Kay Hooper - ditto, but some of the latest I've struggled with. I think they were too dark and I wasn't in the mood for dark, though I enjoy the psychic stuff of her series
Patricia Briggs - I think all her books, but Mercy Thompson and side series
Jim Butcher - but I've only read the Dresden Files (just to put a token guy on my list - but hey years ago I was a Sidney Sheldon reader)
Ilona Andrews (hey does this count as another guy, even if they're a team?)
Lisa Shearin - she's come out with a second series and I've enjoyed it
Gini Koch - her Alien series is a blast, I haven't tried anything else by her yet
Nalini Singh - her psy-changeling series
S.M. Stirling - hey! another guy on my list. It's hard to find male writers who write women well, I guess? I've read both Change series

I have some others but I'm open to suggestions on new authors/series. I do better when I'm reading regularly. Playing varying forms of solitaire and word games isn't the best way to help put my brain to sleep at night.

I just posted this over on Facebook, so if you're one of those friends, you'll see this in two places.

I have been beating myself up because we came home Tuesday night to find that Norbert had died while we were out. He had coughed a few times earlier in the day and some panting but then would go back to breathing normally. I made an appointment for him to be seen early Wednesday morning. I knew things were possibly nearing the end. But at the time we left, his breathing was back to normal. He didn't want to take a treat I tried giving him, that concerned me, but I really didn't think this was it. Gave him scritches and left with Brandon to see his aunt who was in town and his mom's birthday.

Dawn-Marie had stopped by with potato salad supplies shortly after we had left. She said that Norbert got up to say hi, tail wagging and was up on the couch and got pets from her and didn't seem to be having any problems breathing. Just seemed happy to see her along with the other dogs.

We found him on the couch a couple hours later. The dogs were quiet when we got home. They usually start barking once they here the car door closing and I had a few things to get out, so slow to get to the front door. Looks like he had been on a pillow and just left.

Greta had told me that he may have just been waiting to be alone. I was feeling awful that he was alone. But the other dogs were with him. He had been laying where I sit, so he had my scent close to him. We had almost 15 years with the silly boo bear. He's with his Nessa girl who left us six years ago, all too early. Kieran and Leeloo seem to be sleeping more. Kieran cried with William Tuesday night. Leeloo also tried to console William. The humans, we're struggling too.

William went back and forth on what to do, bury or cremate. We went with cremate, and now need to find a special tree to plant in the yard with his ashes, when they come back. We'll also go do a memorial thing at one of the Dove Lewis events for Norbert and Nessa the Scocker Crew gone now.

For those who didn't know Norbert. He was half Scottie and have Cocker Spaniel. The lady from Eugene we got him from called him a Scocker. He was William's dog. He got me into clicker training and SPT - Start Puppy Training, that I would eventually help co-moderate for a few years. He taught me about dog nutrition and holistic medicine. I thought I had a second Scocker with Nessa as a puppy, until she clearly showed her Schnauzer dna at the APDT Conference and everyone was complimenting me on the cute Schnauzer puppy. Norbert got to take puppy agility classes and if his structure had been more sound would have had fun doing that. Dwarfism and a sports doc said that it would put too much strain on his knees and back. I like to credit getting Heather Christensen started in teaching training as I asked her to take on Norbert and William as students when they were both acting in their teen ways. He got to meet famous people like Melissa Alexander the author, who also had a puppy the same time he was in SPT. Linda Tellington-Jones used him in a T-Touch class. She also cleared a raging ear infection with that. Norbert did enjoy Tracking. He was protective of Nessa and a Rule Keeper. It was hard explaining to lab owners that yes, your big black baby might be friendly, but its rude and not listening to Nessa freaking out and Norbert is going to take its face off because its in her face. So more training experiences for all of us, but not nearly enough tracking I think. The Scocker Crew went to a couple of Barn Hunt trainings. Norbert didn't have problems going into the tunnels, but wouldn't bark when he found the rats. This did not stop him from killing a rat that tried coming into the house. He was quick and quiet and in short order it was dead.

Norbert mourned for six months the loss of his Nessa girl. I still miss my girl. He was already a middle aged man, set in his ways when I got Leeloo. His hearing was starting to go. It took us a few years to figure out that he had a chicken-turkey-duck (I gave up and didn't try pheasant) allergy. With his cocker ears, he was prone to ear infections showing his allergy reactions. He did not like have his Cone of Doom for each of his ear surgeries. He enjoyed going for walks and treated Leeloo like Nessa who needed to be protected from other dogs. The last few years, going the full loop around the neighborhood was much harder for him, so a shorter route was his. He still longed to go when I took Kieran and Leeloo for their walks, just not up to their pace. We would find him sitting and waiting near the front door on our return.

*New from FB**In grabbing a pic to add to this post, I realized I forgot to say how much he loved balls. Taking him out to a field to chase after a ball. Getting the mini tennis balls in the house. We could keep him busy running after those. We knew he had slowed down in the last couple years when he would only go once or twice and then go lay down. Leeloo and Kieran aren't as interested in balls.

He loved his backyard, and would amble around with the other two. There was less sunbathing this summer. He would lay on the vent and let the cool air blow on him. He loved the cold days and would always perk up for those and loved playing in the snow. He was always a picky eater, but with Kieran he learned that if I sit at the kitchen door, I too may get a special treat when mom is cooking in the kitchen, so not so old to learn new tricks. Nessa knew this one. Kieran had kind of moved Norbert off the bed. The "hey old man, you can't warn about danger, cause you can't hear it, I should sleep at mom's feet." So Norbert moved off the bed that was harder for him to get up on and got good sleep without being kicked by mom. He had a pillow pile in the closet that he picked to sleep on. It was his man cave because it was dark during the day, if he wanted to stay in there, instead of out with us in the living room. Kieran would alert us if Norbert went to the back door to be let out if we hadn't noticed Norbert up and out of the kitchen (he started doing loops in there trying to find any dropped goodies). With Leeloo, Norbert had relaxed and would come and check out people who came to the house. He had his preference of people who he liked seeing and who he would wanted pets from. He loved his boy and missed not seeing him every day. I know that William probably has guilt about that now, but wasn't able to have Norbert live with him. Norbert would have been lonely even though living with his boy.

Norbert, you'll be missed, you were loved by all of us.

Norbert and Nessa on a walk at Dawson Creek Park. They loved this park and chasing the birds. Together again.

Okay, the Wordpress is nice, but I don't know this just seems easier for me.

I've been thinking more about blogging the last couple of weeks, so think I should jump back in and do that.

I'll see what happens this next week. ;-)

Also noticed that I've received some sales/spam comments on some posts, so went through and deleted those.

I'm trying out WordPress to see if I like its format a little better for putting things up that I'd like to share. Terribly original, I kept the pnwbookgirl name - https://pnwbookgirl.wordpress.com/

Come check it out as a work in progress right now.

They haven't started to felt yet. I don't think my feet have gotten overheated and started to sweat yet to have that start. I need to do some research to see if they could be plausibly period-ish to maybe do for largesse. I had done some research on thrums and can link their use with the British Navy and their hats back to the Monmouth cap. Those thrums were worn on the outside and made kind of a Rastafarian look to the hat.

They are keeping my feet nice and warm, but not TOO warm. The alpaca is starting to fuzzy a little bit more on the outside but they aren't entered in any beauty pageants so still doing what they were intended to do, keep my feet warm. Pattern is still on sale I think.

Need to get some hand sewing projects done before the weekend. Two days to get that accomplished. We'll see!

PNWBookGirlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05599445541260252801noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1682286666187388195.post-38008203861840001542014-01-29T11:00:00.000-08:002014-01-29T11:00:01.585-08:00Project Planning and Ravellenics

By the end of February I need to have the following projects done:

One cowl out of qiviut for Carina - pattern found. I'm going to do Zuzu's Petals by Carina Spencer (yes, I enjoyed the same name thing) Since I spent the $5 for the pattern, I may have to knit another one for me or someone as a gift.

One pair of socks for Carina out of her Zitron Unisono I shared. So need to find a sport weight sock pattern that will look good with self-striping yarn. Bless Ravelry! Doing an advanced pattern search there gives me three pages of patterns to look through to find one or two that will work. Then after looking realized that I'll have to request a book from the library so I can scan the pattern. I like that! It also caused me to find a pair of stranded knee high stockings I want to try. So I'll need to buy another pattern!

Need both of those to be done by February 15th when I'll see Carina/Katera at Carnevale. Doable.

Also due by February 15th - one quilt of undetermined size. I know that I want to use this block. Because Sara used to be a dealer in Vegas and both she and Mike play a lot of card games. I've used this block before and its fun to sew up. I need to dig through my stash and find the ones that I have in the colors they both like. Thankfully, they have colors they each like that will work well together. So depending on how much fabric I have, and how quickly the blocks go together, will depend on how big it gets. My initial aim is to have something that will be at least a couch quilt to snuggle up on there. Would love to be able to put something together that would work on a bed. I'll need to buy the batting and possibly the backing. So budget dependent there.

Due by February 27th, one pair of socks for Dawn-Marie. She specifically asked for these socks. I hadn't planned on learning entrelac, but she's changed that idea. ;-) I have some Noro Silk Garden in my stash in blues-greens that hopefully she'll like. Not sure about the entrelac on the bottom of the foot though. I'll have to see how the comments are on how it wears.

So those are all the things I have to get done for others in February and this last week of January.

February 7th marks the Opening Ceremonies for the Olympics in Sochi. Ravellenics will be happening during that timeframe also. So I need to scope out my competing projects. I think that I can safely include Dawn-Marie's socks in somewhere. That will help. Possibly one of Carina's projects. Ravellenics for any of you new to the concept is knitting/spininng/weaving/crocheting a project or projects while the Olympics are occurring. I have had fun 'competing' for the last few years. Even suffered shoulder injury while knitting a shawl one year. ;-)

I need something for ME to do though. My mother was on a cruise and stopped in Estonia a couple years ago and picked me up some skeins of yarn. Looks like I didn't share on the blog about it! So she bought three skeins of yarn from Kalliver in Tallinn, Estonia. The yarn is the Aade Long Artistic, it's the lavender in the far right of row 1 of the multi-color. The 'Lila', third from the right in the bottom row of the solids. I found the "Thistle" or in Norwegian, Tistel (scroll down to find the pattern download) by seeing what projects other people have done with these yarns.

The Thistle shawl should probably be the main focus of the Ravellenics. It's going to be a big project! I'd also like to have it done in time for the Rose City Yarn Crawl. I know I've been telling Michele I didn't have a use for shawls right now and why I'm not doing the Mystery Knit Along for the event. Then I got a phone call from mom saying she was going to fly up to visit specifically to see the yarn crawl and us for a couple days on March 1st, so deadline for it to be done for sure. Since she's asked several times if I've done anything with this yarn, it was also a birthday gift. I thought I should go ahead and get it done.

The cool factor with the Thistle shawl besides the stranding is that its done in the round and you steek it open. I haven't done any steeking yet, so another new knitting thing to learn/try out. I do like to try out something new each year, so I'll have two things in one month!

The shawl will fit in the main event - Short-Track Shawls. The socks would also fit in the main event - Sock Hockey. Then I can tag them into Entrelac Slalom for the socks, Nordic Colorwork Combined for the shawl and both will fit in the Stash Skeleton (because the yarns for both projects have been in my stash for longer than 6 months.)

I might get wild and enter the Flying Camel Spin event with some handspun yarn. I have some pretty fibers that could be spun up. I think though with the month being February, spinning up some Alexandra Crafts Black Rose BFL I got back in October with a Pearl Fiber Arts store credit from my destash in September.

This should keep me plenty busy in February! February 1st is a Baronial Town Hall and Customary Meeting. There's a fleece sale/spin-in on February 8th as well as Founding Revels for Stromgard. Baroness Jill was asking if we would be there. That's sometimes code for 'you should go to the event' because they want to make sure you get an award. February 15th is Carnevale and Mike and Sara's wedding. The wedding had the date first, but we aren't going there. I need to be at Carnevale as the barony's Minister of Arts and Science to do the A&S Championship. Ravellenics February 7-23. Rose City Yarn Crawl starts on February 27th. That's four days of fun!

I had mentioned something about photos of the next batch of chocolate pudding. I made some for Game Day on Sunday. Didn't get the photos done while making the pudding. But really Smitten Kitchen's are great, so imagine I followed the same process. ;-)

Jenna likes milk chocolate, but I needed to use up some of this chocolate that mom had sent me for Christmas. She's asked if I tried it a couple of times. She does it as a hot chocolate, I thought I'd use it in here. I chopped up one of the two blocks in the box and still needed to fill in for that 1 cup needed for the recipe. So I grabbed down the box of milk chocolates that I have slowly been nibbling on over the last two years that she brought back from Germany. Don't be shocked but they sat uneaten for a couple of months. Straight chocolate I don't eat a lot, I much prefer it as a cake or brownie.

This is the Christmas chocolate box and the finished pudding. I got seven custard cups full of pudding:
With seven cups we all had some on Sunday night and the three of us will have the remainder after dinner Monday night.

My chocolate stash currently has some Ghirardelli Pumpkin Spice Squares that Danna brought back for me from her trip to San Francisco a year ago. They aren't offered all year round, so can't even find them on their web site. Yummy Caramel with the pumpkin spice flavor. (Hmmm seems like someone got in and ate all my pumpkin spice squares!) Erik was going to Switerland and I asked him to bring me back some chocolate. (I paid him for the bars against his wishes.) He brought back a brand I hadn't seen before - Frey. A bar of Truffes au Lait. If I'm reading the ingredients correctly they have a cherry filling - kirsch and a bar of Caramel, with the obvious caramel filling. Both are milk chocolate (I'm driving Brandon crazy by not opening them and sharing.) There's also a bar of Nutcracker Brittle from Theo that is also some Christmas Chocolate. Brandon had gotten this one and I'd gotten one with hot chili peppers in it. We traded because he doesn't like nuts.

These found a new place to live until I decide to share. ;-)

Oh, had thought about trying Smitten Kitchen's Dulce de Leche recipe, but that required the whole quart of whole milk and I didn't want to do a half recipe since then I'd only get half a cup. That just didn't make sense with the time commitment. Hence the repeat of the chocolate pudding. Still have a bit left, so I'll try the hot chocolate with the second bar of American Heritage.

Jenna's arrived. I've made chocolate pudding. Need to take pics of the finished. I used some chocolate that mom brought back from Pennsylvania and some of the leftover milk chocolate from Germany. Added in a bit of Kahlua that I had one of those tiny bottles of. Looking forward to eating it later. We're having orange beef with jasmine rice. She brought egg rolls and fortune cookies to complete the meal.
Had a surprise view with a little Hobbit I've been working on and thought I'd share it with you:
We're playing our Elves in Moria today. Hopefully I don't fall off into a crevasse again! It's a terrible way to die!

ps: this was supposed to post on Sunday. Just discovered it didn't. Sad panda. I didn't fall into a crevasse, but it did go to far and fall down into a lower level into the water and had to wait for Brandon to finish finding where a gear was supposed to be, then come back and get me. We were in the "Water Works" area on LOTRO.

Spent most of the day catching up on shows that we had missed in the last week or two using my Chromecast. So nice to watch on the big TV the shows that we were trying to catch up on with the laptop. I just have one episode of NCIS and Brandon wants to see Rake on FOX, but that's for Sunday before the game.

I thought CBS was having issues, but I figured it out, I didn't have my browser full screen so why it kept having fits and not letting me tab between the show and having it on the TV and still letting me use the laptop. No big deal, meant I "had" to knit. lol Okay, it also kept me off of Facebook.

I got the first one done somewhere after the second Big Bang Theory and I think one of the episodes of Almost Human. Decided it would be the left foot:
I immediately cast on and started the second one. I did take a break to take time out to go out for dinner. Dawn-Marie invited us out with her husband Brent. They had coupons for Home Town Buffet and since I had never been there, we went there. I admit to having some salad and cottage cheese before I went on this whole protein thing. A bit of prime rib, a small chunk of steak, some cod, a chicken thigh, some fried shrimp and a roll. I ended up only eating a couple of the shrimp, too greasy. The rest was pretty good. There was a thin slice of carrot cake, after all, it didn't have walnuts! No death by nut. Tried their chocolate pudding, not as good as the stuff I made on Thursday. I used Smitten Kitchen's Best Chocolate Pudding, and I'm going to make more of it again soon I'm sure! I do have the leftover whole milk to use up. It will either go into a pudding or maybe try making this?

So I finished up the second slipper while were in the middle of the Sleepy Hollow season finale. (We started the series online at episode 5, because that's when we had the Chromecast and people were giving it decent reviews.)
The colors may not be terribly exciting, but their purpose was to make something for me and I needed to make something quickly. Michele's KAL inspired me to get going. Now, tomorrow morning before we game, I'm going to see if I can get my Central Park Hoodie cast on. I will even start out by doing a swatch! NCIS should help with that. ;-)

Michele is doing the mystery knit along for the Rose City Yarn Crawl. She's the pattern designer. But the pattern is a shawl. I have enough shawls and not terribly excited to knit one right now. I have one I need to knit from yarn my mother bought me last year for my birthday. She's been asking if I've used the yarn, need to make it in the next few months. ;-)

Michele is doing another KAL, one for her Thrumbelina pattern, I thought it was one I could do for myself. I've knit samples for Knitted Wit and made a pair for my niece, Bailey.

Decided to use the Lamb's Pride in Bittersweet that I got from Friday and the free alpaca fleece from Bethany to make them. Since the fleece had been cleaned, I just need to pull out the locks and knit them in. Their length isn't long enough to make the suggested butterfly thrums out of them, so I'm just pulling the locks out the bag and aligning them in the same direction and knitting them as I go along. It will take a bit longer but overall not any longer than if I had made all the little butterflies in advance.

All the supplies

Michele had mentioned making her thrums a bit bigger than normal so that the slipper is a little more 'cushy'. Thought this sounded like a good plan so after the first row, thickened up the thrums a bit. The alpaca is so soft and will felt a bit with wear, so looking forward to how that happens.

Here's my progress after spending some time knitting them while at Pearl Fiber Arts on Wednesday:
I need to get these done so that I can start getting a couple projects done for Carina. Need to knit up her qiviut into a cowl. I thought I had the perfect pattern, then the Yarn Harlot posted this. I think it may work better than the other pattern. So I'll buy it and give it a try. Her husband, Ken, washed the socks that I made for her. It was lovely yarn, but not superwash. So after chatting with her about how nice superwash was. We met up at Pearl Fiber Arts so that she could take a look at the yarns available. Unfortunately, because dyers are getting ready for the Rose City Yarn Crawl, some of the local stuff wasn't available. She was able to find a nice skein of another sport weight yarn in her favorite colors - blue-green.

I cropped this down, but for some reason blogger refuses to see the cropped version or even that I renamed it as the cropped size. So you get all the stuff around it.

For some reason this blue-green yarn is really hard to photograph the true richness of its colors. Then I went to look and I'm not the only one. Check it out here on this site, its color 1220 Blues. Still have to find a pattern to do with this. It will be fun with the long color stripes.
I have been making things for people and I do enjoy that. But its also impacted my creativity a bit because I guess I haven't felt the appreciation for all of it? I had kind of promised myself that I would make at least one thing for myself each month before making and giving away anything to others.

I did make the black velvet 12th Night hat for myself, so I'm counting it as a crafty thing. Good thing too! Because I had to come up with a birthday present for Jaime last weekend and I was resisting knitting her something. I really wanted to do it, but couldn't bring it all together to make it happen. So instead, I sewed her a Kindle/Nook/Kobo cover:
Turns out Jaime has a Kobo. She hasn't been bringing it to many events (I'd seen that she had something like a Kindle at Sport of Kings) because she couldn't hide it. Now she can!
I had my gift Visa from my mom with me and was happy that I had some $$ to spend. The last big event - September Crown/Autumn War I could drool but not buy.

In particular was Thistle Hollow. She had a bunch of spinning fiber I haven't spun yet. If I had more money to spend I would have bought more of course. I settled for some Manx Loaghtan and got two bundles so I can have lots of fun playing with the fiber. It's a Rare Primitive Breed that has a dual purpose. Meat and fiber. The fiber is soft unlike some dual purpose sheep where the wool is more intended for outer wear. (Or for you non-fiber people, what you'd want to wear close to your skin, or not. lol)
I can't remember the name of the booth, but it was just a few down from them and they were selling various fiber related supplies for weaving, but had books for naalbinding too. I found a nice little bone shuttle/beater:
It was a steal at only $6!
In between the two was a knife dealer. I've been long wanting a knife. People had been talking a bodice knife, but all the pictures for the various German ladies have them hanging off their belt along with their purse.
Grendel makes lovely knives, but I can't afford him yet. So had to make do with something that is half handmade. I went back and forth between two bone knives and had Ignatius come and look and give his thoughts. After a little price discussion with the vendor, we agreed on a price. (His wife had quoted me $10 less than what he quoted, so we had to agree with her price before it came home with me.) It included the sheath and is very balanced, if not 'pretty':
The little heddle I had picked up at our first An Tir - West War when I took the board weaving class and made my pouch. I think its a 12 dent heddle. He didn't have it handy to make for it, but its pretty close in size I think. You can see the holes that he drilled so that I can tie on to the posts.

I'm looking forward to learning how to use it! It also explains why I got the bone thread winder above. ;-)

This year 12th Night was up in SeaTac at the DoubleTree Hotel. We were able to go because we shared a room with Dawn-Marie and Susan. Thus splitting the cost of everything. We bought food to eat in the hotel for breakfast and lunch and ate at Denny's for dinner. Still a little spendy but fun.

We arrived mid-afternoon on Friday and settled into our room. Went had dinner before changing for the ball. Millicent and Ignatius were looking forward to the ball. Millicent had a new Italian style dress she had made for her with bees all over, completed just the day before:
I have some velvet in the same color that I have planned for a German style dress. It's heavy! I had added a panel and some decorations to the belt of the dress I made for 12th Night last year. I also added a satin guard to the back neckline that I had done with a mink collar last year. Used some black velvet to make a little hat to wear with it and while not perfect, happy with how it came out, shows most of the front of the dress:
Gwen and I checked out the Merchant's area. She found a basket. I was tempted by other things you'll see in another post. There were lots of Vigils going on Friday night for those being elevated to Laurels and Pelicans. We knew two of them and Gwyn had been asked to look in on one of the nine that were going on. Unfortunately we got up there late and missed the two and Baron Refr was acting as gatekeeper on the third. I did write a congratulations to Baroness Cristiana in her book though. Ignatius did get to chat briefly with her on Saturday and she did remember where we met her and her family - at Glymm Mere's Bardic Ithra I think three years ago. We had dinner with her family. It was a most delicious dinner! It's been fun watching her take part on Retinue for the Crown:
I had woken up Saturday morning with a very swollen right eye lid and a slightly swollen left. I had not been able to find my make-up wipes and since it was late, and I was tired, I used the hotels wash cloth and facial bar to wash my face. Ugh! On the right I must have scratched the skin a bit and that allowed the allergic reaction. I took a couple of benedryls and tried icing them but they remained swollen for most of the day.

Since Saturday was also a court day, I didn't get down until much later than planned. Missed the Laurel Speed Dating, the Sable Lion Weaving meeting as well as the Embellisher's Guild meeting. So I went to court in 'comfy' clothes, but borrowed a veil from Millicent so I didn't have to put my hair up:
My Green Gates of Hell dress with my dusty rose dress you saw me wearing for Yule Feast with my honey-comb apron. Gwen was wearing a tunica that she had done all the hand sewing on. Millicent was wearing a dress that she had made by Windblown Whimsey.

I started a little project while in court:

It's in number 10 Crochet Thread and US 0000 needles. It only took me three attempts to get the cast on correct with 120 stitches. It's also interesting knitting with three colors in a row. Can't wait until I have all of them!

Court:

I think the combination of not getting enough sleep and those benedryls really got me though. I was only able to stay for a couple hours and did not see the step down and step up ceremonies.

Saturday after court we did get back down and saw some of the Rapier competition. Eoghan was able to compete and was wearing his new garb:

He had Guard duty during court

Then we popped up to the Penthouse floor and tried to find friends at the parties and while we did say hi to people, never did really settle into a party. A little too crowded and loud for me, so we ended back in our room. Ana and Nicolai did show up for the invited Cards Against Humanity game. It was just the five us and Ana was a little the worse for wear so only a few rounds were done before they headed off to put her to bed.

Sunday came all too soon and we were up packing, dressing and heading home. We'll skip the next one that is down in Eugene next year. We will be helping out with the one for 2016 as our Barony won the bid for that event. We are all on staff in some capacity.

I had bought a skein of pale blue superwash yarn. A nice bouncy soft yarn, but so pale of a blue it looked anemic. When I was contemplating knitting for nieces and nephews I flirted with making a Minion hat. The yellow I bought at the same time was just the right color, the blue, not so much.

So how about overdyeing it? Pulled out the Blue Raspberry Kool-Aid. It didn't seem dark enough, so added some blue Wilton's dye and it was pretty good.
So I had to pour in more of the Wilton's because I noticed when I tried pulling it out the first time that some of it had not dissolved into the water before pouring it in and it sat on the yarn - those very dark splotches. Sad panda.

Added more Wilton's to hot water and stirred and stirred to get it all to dissolve into the water and still a tiny bit didn't at the end. You see this as its slipping into the water. The color doesn't show well here in the photos, but its definitely brighter and kind of fun.

Sadly, in an effort not to have tie lines where the skein is held as a hank I didn't tighten up Kraemer's ties. Kraemer is the manufacturer of the yarn. What does this mean for me? When I went to try to put it through the ball winder the hank on the swift had fits. I'm now left to wind it up by hand into a ball and then put it back through the ball winder or back into a hank with a niddy-noddy.

That's why I had to buy a skein of Encore to do Keefe's Ola hat waves. The hank went into a time out to be dealt with after Christmas. I've started to detangle it, and as usual its frustrating. Since its superwash, I can't cut and spit splice ends.

It's January and we have the possibility of more snow yet this year. Well until at least April anyway. We did have a week of very low, below 20 temperatures before Christmas. I do enjoy our mild temperate climate!

I have been working on this particular project for months! I had hoped to have it done earlier in the year, but turned out that getting them done in time for Yule worked out too. They are part of a other things that I didn't get finished and need to get wrapped up here in the next few weeks, so future posts about those. ;-)

These are hand embroidered drink covers. First drew out the pattern using a light box on some gold linen. Stitched using some of my black lace alpaca. Used embroidery and cross stitch to complete. Then ironed the squares and stitched those to blue linen circles I cut out. Then hemmed the circles. Next step was adding beads to act as weights to keep the cloth from flying off in winds. I strung sets of beads on and when attaching to the circle made sure to add a knot in case of any breakage.

I completed Ignatius, Larissa (yes, she really needs to come up with an SCA name!), Millicent and Edoaine's:

If you put them all together, you get MILE. ;-)

I've since finished the embroidery on mine, just need to stitch it down to the circle and then do the beading. We've since added Gwencalon to the Household, so I'll need to make another one! I had thought of this so have a couple extra ready to be embroidered.

I was having a really hard time doing gift knitting. I came back from the beach with the turkey carcass and leftovers. We had one more dinner off of it that Sunday night for our gaming group. Then I popped it into two pots and started cooking it for broth. I had pulled off the excess turkey. Realized that I had leftover carrots and celery as well as a pressure cooker. Pulled out the pressure cooker, rounded up jars and lids and then started canning turkey broth and turkey soups.
So ended up with lots of broth and enough jars of soup that I gave some to family as part of their Christmas gifts. Those along with jars of jam helped so I didn't have to knit as much! I did give some pre-yarn crawl knit along items as gifts. Worked out well for me that way!

This left me with knitting some hats for one niece and three nephews. Logan got a couple of books and Cole got a stuffed toy and a bunch of socks. His dad, my brother Scott, said that he really needed those too. A week's worth of fun socks to wear may not be really really exciting to receive, but parents ultimately appreciate it!
Garrett's hat, the Half-Pipe, I had planned to use the Berrocco Alpaca, but The Knitting Bee doesn't carry it any longer. Since the pattern calls for using two strands of DK together, Trish and I decided that using an Aran weight would work. I didn't want him to worry about washing, so got some 220 Aran Superwash in a nice Charcoal. I need to get a pic of him wearing it, just have him opening up the package at Christmas:

Little brother Cole, liked the hat so much that he put in a request for one 'just like it'. He's three. He asked, so he'll get a hat. Not sure when I will see him next, because he's not always at family events. I'm also almost out of that green, so it may be in a different main color but same blue.

Adam got a Turn A Square Hat in a variety of colors. I think he likes it. He was wearing it for awhile. So it wasn't an on to make me happy, then right back off. I figure he can wear it under his helmet when he's four wheeling with his dad and grandfather.
Again, I was knitting this hat just an hour before giving it to him. I'm so burned out on gift knitting. Maybe if I saw things being worn, I may be more excited to knit and gift things to people?

I did chat with Carina at 12th Night. I still have the qiviut I spun for her. Confirmed that yes, she does want a cowl out of it. So found a pattern that I think will be nice, just need to get it knit up! First though, I really need to knit something for me!

The Baronies of Dragon's Mist and Three Mountains held their first combined Yule event and I think it came off pretty well! Granted I spent 95% of my time in the kitchen, so I missed a LOT of what was going on. Unlike last year, there was more than enough food, even after a table mishap took out a couple of crockpots.
We've used the beach house for the weekend before, this time it was after celebrating with my family in Corvallis, Thanksgiving. This trip was a Household trip for the Golden Bees. We had Dawn-Marie with her husband Brent, their daughter Larissa and Jenna along. Turns out that they all came down without having a Thanksgiving dinner. I had received a free turkey that month for shopping, so brought it and some potatoes for making mashed ones. Jenna brought the green bean casserole and Dawn-Marie made deviled eggs and cranberry sauce and brought a small brown sugar ham from Fred Meyer.

Friday we put it all together and had it for our dinner. That was after grocery shopping for weekend supplies and having lunch at Abbey's Pizza. There was also movie watching and taking Leeloo down to the beach at low tide. She loves the beach! It's a community beach and there weren't a lot of people and its long enough that you can see people. So I felt free to let her run off leash and have fun being a dog.

I LOVE the BEACH!

Saturday Dawn-Marie, Larissa and Brent went in to look at the shops. They left Devin, their Chihuahua with us. He cried and fussed. So couldn't find his gear so put him in Leeloo's harness and walked him down to the beach. The little sausage could back right out of it if he decided that, no I'm not going forward. You wouldn't think that he'd get cold but after a bit Brandon had to carry him around because he was shivering. Could have been fear too. Leeloo had a blast while we were there, but went back up because he was cold.

She didn't enjoy the baths after because the sink doesn't have a sprayer so it took longer. Plus I hadn't thought about it, so didn't have her shampoo. Small price to pay for all the fun!

Brandon got some sewing done while we were there and I tried out the pattern pieces that Jaime had created from a bodice that had gotten too big for me. Jenna tried cutting out some fabric while we were at the beach, but overall it was just a relaxing weekend. Watching sing along movies - Pitch Perfect, Rock of Ages, and Mamma Mia! As well as introducing Jenna to Cards Against Humanity.

So long as Brandon's Uncle Dave has the house, we'll try for another beach weekend late spring as another household get away.
